Freestyle Skiing

Freestyle Skiing is a form of acrobatic, aerial and technical skiing. Freestyle Skiing has a number of sub categories or types, however it does not have any impartial International Sports Governing Body.

Freestyle Skiing was taken seriously in the early 60’s and 70’s when it was nicknamed as “riding on a flying slice of salami”

Many people in the 60’s were of the view that this style of skiing should not be added to the Olympic Sports, due the dangerous nature of the sport and the high amount of risk involved in it.

As Freestyle Skiing started attracting more adventurers and explorers, injuries whilst Freestyle Skiing became a common phenomenon. The most common injuries caused were to knees of the riders as the maximum risk in the Freestyle Skiing was landing, which involved the legs absorbing the impact of the jump. The majority of the injuries reported in the Freestyle Skiing were due to poor landing.
