What is covered
- Dog sledding* — husky or any other team, as passenger or driver
- Reindeer sledding*
- Sleigh rides* — reindeer, horse or dog drawn
- Snowshoeing* and snow shoe walking
Emergency medical and repatriation is £10,000,000, with mountain rescue up to £50,000.
* No personal liability cover applies to these activities. You are covered for injury to yourself.
You are not covered for damage you cause — see below.
These sit alongside your skiing, so a trip that mixes a few days on the slopes with a husky safari is one policy.
Driving the sled yourself
Covered on the same basis as riding as a passenger.
Most operators put you through a briefing and send a guide with the group.
Follow what they tell you — the usual conditions about following the operator's instructions and safety requirements apply here as they do anywhere.
Lapland and the Arctic
Most of our dog sledding customers are going to Finnish or Swedish Lapland, Norway or Iceland, often on a short trip built around it rather than a ski holiday.
You do not need to be skiing to hold a winter sports policy.
It is the winter sports cover that brings the sledding, the snowmobiling and the other snow activities inside the policy.
Camera and phone batteries fail quickly at minus twenty. Baggage cover has a single article limit, so check it against anything valuable you are taking.
Damage to the sled is not covered
Personal liability does not apply to dog sledding, reindeer sledding or sleigh rides.
If you tip the sled or damage it, that is between you and the operator, and your policy will not respond.
Operators normally require you to sign their own terms, and any damage to the sled or injury to the dogs is a matter between you and them.
Ask what their waiver covers before you sign it.
Prepare before you go dog sledging
- Dress warm, with lots of layers
- Bring sunscreen — the sun can be mighty off the snow
- Bring lots of water
- Make sure you have insurance
Dog sledging tours
A dog sledging tour is a camp of four or five nights, staying in a different camp each night — often heated tents — with the sledges as the mode of transport between them.
If that is the sole purpose of your trip, check your insurance.
Many policies cover dog sledging only where it is incidental to the trip.

Doing more than the dogs?
Most Lapland trips are a mix.
The other activities are covered too, and they are on the same policy:
- Snowmobiling insurance — including the licence requirement in Finland
- Cross country skiing
- Annual winter sports insurance, if you are taking more than one trip this year

What if I damage the sled?
That is between you and the operator, and your policy will not respond.
Most operators offer a damage waiver for a small fee.
Personal liability does not respond to claims arising from the activity itself, so read their terms before you sign.
Is dog sledging covered as the sole purpose of my trip?
Yes.
Many policies cover it only where it is incidental to the trip; ours covers it as the sole purpose.
Is a multi-day sledging tour covered?
Yes, including camp-to-camp tours staying in a different camp each night.
Does my policy cover the trip as well as the activity?
Yes.
It is a full travel policy — cancellation, baggage, delay and the rest, alongside the activity cover.
