The mandatory ski insurance offered with a lift pass in Italy, often called "Snowcare" or a similar name, is a quick and easy way to comply with the law.

What the Lift Pass Insurance Covers

The insurance purchased with a ski pass is primarily a basic third-party liability policy. This means it is designed to cover the mandatory legal requirement:

  • Third-Party Liability: This is the core coverage. It protects you financially if you cause an accident on the slopes that injures another person or damages their equipment. This is what the Italian law (Legislative Decree 40/21) requires.

  • Legal Protection: It typically includes legal assistance in the event of a claim.

  • First Aid and Rescue Costs: Many policies also cover the costs of emergency first aid and rescue services on the slopes, which can be expensive.

  • Partial refund for unused portions of your ski pass, ski lessons, or equipment rental if you have an accident and are unable to continue skiing.

Crucially, this basic insurance typically has limitations:

  • No Off-Piste Coverage: This is a major exclusion. The lift pass insurance is generally only valid on the marked and open ski runs within the resort. It will not cover you for accidents or incidents that occur while skiing off-piste.

  • Limited Personal Injury/Medical Costs: While it may cover rescue and first aid, it often does not provide comprehensive coverage for your own medical expenses, such as hospital stays or repatriation to your home country. For this, you need a full travel or winter sports insurance policy.

  • No Equipment Coverage: It generally does not cover the cost of your personal ski equipment if it is lost, stolen, or damaged.

How Much Does it Cost?

The cost of this type of insurance is generally very affordable.

  • Daily: €3 to €4 per person, per

  • Weekly:  €21 to €28.

  • Seasonal: €45 to €50.
